SONNET AS LIST OF THINGS TO TELL THE DAUGHTER THAT I MIGHT SOMEDAY HAVE

Zoe Reay-Ellers

Eat a lot of cheese. Look at the moon. Pallbear

my memory after I die. Keep cash in your wallet

or keep friends that do. Always buy coconuts

from roadside fruit stands. Let sweet juice drip

down your beautiful chin. Know that it is beautiful

because my body is your body and my body

is hardy and soft and a forum for freckles.

Remember that you are magic enough

to build bone from birria burrito. Prepare

for an aching afterwards, a concaved mattress

left in your apartment that isn’t your bed. Pretend

to be asleep after long and late drives and let me

carry you inside. Let me lay you down and curl

myself around you like a half-furled fiddlehead.
