BULBS
By Devon Neal
When I’m writing on the couch at night—
the living room starred with a single lamp,
the basketball game flickering on the low-volume TV—
and I notice you’ve quietly closed your eyes,
loosely wrapped in a blanket
and lying behind me, your hips against my back,
my thoughts go to the first pale bulbs
sprouting from the daylily out front
on a golden early May morning
and how I want to give them everything,
but the best thing I can do
is give them a bed to lie in
and stretch in the still-cool air.
